As spring blooms into summer, we relish in the explosion of life all around us on the farm. In the heat of the day the bees are buzzing around the Calendula, Borage, and Sweet William flowers, fireflies bespeckle the pastures in the evening, and golden finch bird calls wake us at the cool hours of dawn. We are reminded every day that life goes on no matter what. Animals need to be cared for, weeds need to be tended, and our children need to grow and thrive.

All too often, heart disease goes unseen. But while symptoms are widely unrecognized, heart disease kills more people than any other disease in the developed world. It is the number one cause of death in America and the number one killer of women. Heart disease claims the lives of more women than breast and lung cancer combined.

Many early symptoms of heart disease are identical to anxiety and indeed they often go together. Because of this, women are too often dismissed when it comes to these warning signs. Doctors frequently tell them their symptoms are psychosomatic; they’re given anti-anxiety medication and sent on their way.

The Center for Biological Diversity and Greenpeace México have strongly condemned the United States’ heavy-handed intervention into Mexico’s decision to phase out genetically engineered (GE) corn that’s produced using pesticide-intensive farming practices and the herbicide glyphosate. The new U.S. agriculture trade chief Doug McKalip demanded Mexico provide answers to questions about the planned phaseout by Feb. 14 as part of the United States’ threats to respond to Mexico’s decision with punitive steps, including filing formal trade complaints.

I have been telling everyone I come across about the new toxic coating ‘Apeel’ that has been approved to be put on our fruits and vegetables. So far, I have not come across anyone who has heard of it. I have a booth at the local farmer’s market and last Thursday, here in Westland, Michigan where I live, I had flyers to hand out about ‘Apeel’. No one had heard of it and the people who sell produce at the market had not either and they were very interested to learn more about it.

Calley Means, a former Coca-Cola lobbyist turned whistleblower, sheds light on some of the tactics that food companies use to protect their profits at the expense of public health.

In an interview with activist, Russell Brand, Means explained a page from the food industry playbook: Coca-Cola had been actively and strategically promoting the idea that sugary drinks like Coke could be part of a healthy diet, despite enormous evidence to the contrary. Means revealed that Coca-Cola had been working directly with healthcare providers to downplay the link between sugary drinks and diabetes and sponsoring thousands of studies to confuse the link between dietary sugar and obesity.
